I am commenting without reading the article; even though I've just started the book, I recommend Elizabeth Gilbert's "Committed." Gilbert, late of "Eat, Pray, Love" fame explores commitment in general and in marriage.
The first chapter is a real eye opener. You should check it out.
It shows how much we (in the U.S., especially) tend to live in a fantasy world regarding relationships.
